TOKYO AMERICAN CLUB
Tokyo American Club | Tokyo, Japan | Site-specific installation | 2024
In April 2024 I was invited by Tokyo American Club to curate the spaces of 51 East, the members’ restaurant of the club.
For the installation I selected a group of works created between 2020 and 2024, all produced during my years in Japan and previously exhibited in my solo shows in Tokyo. At the center of the space I placed the large-scale painting Cry Me a River (2022), whose figure stands in a suspended emotional state, capturing a moment of tension between vulnerability and strength.
On the opposite wall I installed three medium-sized works — ONE (2022), TWO (2022), and FIVE (2022) — originally presented as part of my solo exhibition DECADE – I Was Fine Before You Came at Gallery Ether in 2023. The works reflect on personal experiences from the past decade and explore the shifting emotional landscape of modern relationships.
Three smaller paintings — Rollercoaster (2020), The Cross II (2020), and Kanazawa (2020) — complete the installation. These earlier works show the continuity of my visual language, where elements of neo-expressionism, graffiti and pop aesthetics merge into a recognizable and evolving body of work.
The project was accompanied by a dedicated interview published in the club’s magazine INTOUCH.
